2016 Trends To Leave Behind This Year!
There were so many trends last year that I loved – the maximalist beauty first brought forward by Gucci, undone shirting a la Sara Donaldson of Harper and Harley, and innovative structural pieces by homegrown stars Dion Lee and Toni Maticevski, to name a few – but as many good ones hit the streets, there are some that need to be left in 2016.
THE ‘NAKED’ DRESS
One of the main fixtures on the red carpet last year was the naked dress – barely there, but worn to make a statement. Stars like Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian all wore the trend (to various effect), but with such a large group of celebrities wearing the daring look, the shock factor wore off pretty quickly. Let’s leave this bedazzled trend behind in 2017.
UNWEARABLE FOOTWEAR
Every season, there is a statement shoe that while beautiful, would never really be practical to wear anywhere other than the runway. In 2016 we saw sky-high platforms, furry pool slides, and perspex thigh-high boots were everywhere, but while they made a statement, they never really made it past models or celebrities – after all, if you can’t walk in them, then they’re not serving their purpose.
OVERTLY DISTRESSED DENIM
Distressed denim has been a trend with legs for the last few years, but in 2016, denim became more shreds than fabric. While a little bit of wear makes denim a little more rock and roll, too much makes it look like you’re too lazy to replace your jeans.
ATHLEISURE EVERYWHERE
You could not escape athleisure in 2016. Yes, comfort was a massive drawcard to this trend, but looking like you’re perpetually on the way to the gym got old pretty fast. Fashion is fun, there’s so much more to try than leggings and slogan tee shirts!
EXTREME CONTOURING
Not a new trend, but one that certainly reached new heights in 2016, lead in part by the Kardashians, extreme contouring was everywhere in the last 12 months. A quick search on YouTube will bring up hundreds if not thousands of make-up tutorials showing how to achieve the look, but in reality, if you don’t have a glam squad, it’s simply too time-consuming of a look to wear every day.
